The Ultimate ATPL Resources

There are so many sites, books, and apps that complement the ATPLs. It's not realistic to think that you're going to sit with your head in the Oxford textbooks throughout your ATPLs. Sure, these textbooks are great, but you've got to use as many resources as possible.

Some of the below won't directly help you with ATPLs in the way your tutor will, but they will all broaden your aviation knowledge and help you understand more about this beautiful industry.

Websites

ATPL Questions (ATPLQ)

ATPL Questions is a treasure trove for students preparing for their exams. This website offers a database of questions closely resembling those found in actual ATPL exams. Regularly updated by users and professionals, the site includes detailed explanations to help you understand concepts. The community-driven discussions are especially helpful for clarifying doubts and gaining additional insights.

Aviation Herald

Aviation Herald is not just a news site; it’s an educational goldmine for aviation enthusiasts and professionals alike. By analysing real-world aviation incidents and accidents, the site provides invaluable lessons about operational safety, human factors, and aircraft systems—critical knowledge areas for any aspiring airline pilot. The case studies can complement your theoretical ATPL knowledge with practical, real-world applications.

Simply Aviation

Simply Aviation is a fantastic resource for aviation news, reviews, and industry updates. While it focuses primarily on passenger experiences and aviation trends, the site provides valuable context about the airline industry, helping students understand the broader ecosystem they will join. It’s an excellent way to stay inspired and informed throughout your ATPL studies.

Books

Chris Brady’s Boeing 737 Technical Guide

If you're interested in gaining an in-depth understanding of one of the most popular aircraft in the industry, Chris Brady’s Boeing 737 Technical Guide is essential. While not an ATPL study guide, this book offers detailed insights into the systems, operation, and quirks of the Boeing 737. The practical knowledge you'll gain from this guide is immensely valuable, especially if you plan to transition into type rating training for the 737 in the future.

Be aware that a lot of the information in this book is beyond type rating level, never mind ATPLs. But it will make you understand AGK like no ATPL textbook could. After all, the AGK and Instrumentation syllabus is heavily based on the 737!

Bravo Fox ATPL

This book is not very well known, but it's probably the best ATPl summary book I've seen. It has great diagrams and summaries of every subject in the sylabus.

YouTube Channels

Stig Aviation

Stig Aviation is a fantastic YouTube channel for visual learners. The channel covers a variety of aviation topics, including systems, navigation, and performance, with clear explanations and engaging visuals. The content aligns well with ATPL syllabi and often simplifies complex topics, making them easier to grasp.

Mentour Pilot

Though not exclusively focused on ATPL, Mentour Pilot is another excellent channel for understanding aviation concepts, operational procedures, and industry insights. Videos often dive into the kind of applied knowledge you’ll need for your career as an airline pilot.

Apps

Aviation Exam

This is similar to ATPLQ. I actually studied with Aviation Exam when I was doing my own ATPLs. It is very good, and the best thing is that it has a mobile app. ATPLQ is more popular nowadays; I use it with my own students, but you can't download questions for offline access, as far as I'm aware.

SkyDemon

While primarily designed as a flight planning tool, SkyDemon can be helpful during your ATPL studies, especially for topics like navigation and airspace. Exploring real-world airspace layouts and creating flight plans can bring theoretical knowledge to life.

ForeFlight

Similar to SkyDemon, ForeFlight provides advanced flight planning and weather tools that are particularly useful for understanding real-world applications of meteorology and operational procedures covered in the ATPL syllabus.
